Attendance at today’s meeting was a pleasant surprise. Only three members were no-shows, with one of those in school and the other sick. Good job guys! We were also blessed with a make up from Vandenberg Village Rotary who claimed his name was George McKinney. I didn’t think to inquire about a possible relationship to our own Patty. The Dean Palius (PHP) hosted meeting was fantastic. Good food, good fun and we collected considerable canned goods for People Helping People. Julie attempted to add glamour to our gathering by likening it to the Knights of the Round Table based on the table and chair arrangement. Major stretch. Bobby B’s virtues were extolled and a suggestion made that he be given the medal of valor with two purple hearts and two clusters (I’m not sure what that means) because he has now shown up at two events where he was the only one from our club that did so. It takes a little sheen off the award presentation (and resulting ‘hero’ status) when you find out that both of the events had been cancelled. Danny V showed up with PDG Arnie Dowdy in tow. Seems as though they were going to discuss Rotary Foundation after our meeting. Sounds like a Foundation program in the near future. Dan also regaled those in attendance with the continuing saga of his son’s soccer team’s successes. Their win streak continues and the next venue is Bakersfield. Roll on! PP Ed made an announcement the broke up the meeting and resulted in cacophonous laughter, shrieks of incredulity and various other manifestations of shock and awe. He informed us he had successfully completed an ethics course. While he had the room on tilt he further announced/requested that he was, and we should, support fund raising for a scholarship fund in the name of Ryan Moore, through Rabobank. Ed had pledge envelopes wrapped around bottles of wine to promote the effort. They will be available next meeting with additional info on the fund. Discussion but no action on; car wash, bike event, and cow chip bingo.

Program was our own Harris Sherline, providing information on the direct and indirect tax burden placed on us through fed, state, and local government, as well as quasi governmental entities such as the phone companies and other utilities. Combined vehicles of unfunded mandates, utilities, fines/penalties, added to the more obvious taxing instruments results in more than 50% taxation for most Americans. Scary stuff. Thanx Harris. As I stated in last week’s intro to this program; educational and painful. Anyone wanting more info on the subject (masochists) should go to Harris’s website and review some of his research on “Stealth Taxation”.
